Windows
Dust or wipe the frame first. Don’t clean in frosty weather when the glass is brittle and liable to break, or when a hot sun is shining on the windows. You can use virtually anything for cleaning windows from cool tea to crumpled newspapers. Faith and elbow grease can make them all work. Once you get the hang of them, those rubber-bladed wipers which professionals use are very quick.
Curtains
Curtains should be hung as far as possible from the glass because condensation will shorten the life of a fabric.
Lined, interlined and large curtains are best dry-cleaned. For curtains suitable for washing, here are some general reminders. Remove hooks. Release simple gathers. Soak for ten minutes in cold water and a little liquid detergent. Rinse, remove as much water as possible, then launder in the correct way for that fabric. It is always better to wash separately. Don’t wring or wash too energetically - daily exposure to sun and elements may have weakened fabric.
Acrylics should be washed according to HLCC (Home Laundering Consultative Council) wash code No. 6. Nets, particularly in towns, should be washed very frequently. Glass fibre curtains should be washed gently by hand, never wrung, rubbed or put in a spin dryer. See HLCC wash code No. 8. Put a nottoo-heavy rod through the hem of net and lace curtains when you hang them up to dry. It will ensure that the hems hang evenly and they will need very little ironing.
Blinds
Venetian: Keep dust-free. When they need washing, try wearing a pair of old fabric gloves, dip your fingers in warm, not too soapy water (lather is difficult to get rid of) and run your fingers along the slats. Or you can unhook the blind and wash it in the bath.
If venetian blinds are hung in a kitchen, clean frequently before there is any build-up of grime.
Pleatex : Pleatex blinds are made from strong Kraft paper and need a minimum of maintenance. Dust with vacuum cleaner attachment.
Roller : To clean blinds made from cotton impregnated with polyvinyl acetate, and wipe with sponge wrung out in clean lukewarm water. Don’t immerse in water, scrub, or hang in humid atmosphere. Holland blinds need dusting only. Some with a special finish can be wiped with detergent and water.
