Baths, basins, bidets
Ideally these should be cleaned immediately after use before soap and grime have a chance to harden. If you do it then, no special cleaners other than hot soapy water are needed.
Prevent lime forming round waste hole, by making sure taps don’t drip.
Change the washer in time. To clean cast-iron or vitreous enamel or porcelain appliances, use mild abrasive paste, rinse off and dry. For difficult stains, rub with a little vinegar—but rinse away thoroughly as quickly as possible. Avoid abrasive remedies which may also remove enamel. A paste or jelly stain remover is easy to use and will remove stains with minimum damage to surfaces.
To clean acrylic (Perspex) baths, use mild detergent. Warm soapy water and soda only if it has got greasy. Liquid metal polish only if the surface has got scratched.
Showers
China tray should be cleaned like a vitreous enamelled bath; acrylic trays like acrylic baths.
In hard-water areas, the tile surround needs wiping down to keep off the white lime deposits. The rose, if it gets blocked, can be pricked clear with a pin.
Lavatory pans
Keep clean with daily shake of lavatory cleaner or bleach, but do not mix the two as they can combine to form a poisonous gas.
Alternatively, let one of those foaming, cleaning colouring blocks that hangs in the cistern do the job for you.
For bad lime and other stains, treat with spirits of salts (hydrochloric acid). Use carefully as these are poisonous and corrosive. Mix in glass or china container, pouring one measure of acid into two of clean, cold water. Use rubber gloves and apply with a brush on a handle (old lavatory or washing-up brush). If the stain is below water-level pour in acid mixture, leave a few moments and scrub off with brush. If above water-level, apply with brush, doing a section at a time.
This treatment can be used for sinks and baths, but the acid must not touch metal (smear a protective layer of Vaseline over waste hole and taps if necessary) and it must not remain in contact with enamel for too long.
