Where and how we sleep can have an enormous effect on us. If, for example, we sleep in a healthy and undisturbed environment, we will be in a better position to remain fit and well and to cope with the stresses and strains of our daily lives. If, though, we use badly designed beds in a disturbed type of environment leading to consistently poor sleep, our whole lives may suffer. The stresses of the day will become more intrusive, our mood irritable, and our bodies more open to fatigue and illness. One of the notable things about sleep is that it takes up such a large percentage of our lives and happens almost always in the same bed. This is no problem if the bedroom and the bed both form part of a healthy environment. If they don’t, you may be storing up long-term problems.
Children, the elderly, and the infirm all spend extra time in bed and will, therefore, be all the more susceptible to damage. Sleeping for years in a bed that is too soft, for example, can lead eventually to poor posture and will almost certainly inhibit the proper rest and regeneration you should expect from sound sleep on a firm bed. Sleeping in a bedroom full of synthetic carpets and furnishings, in beds made of unhealthy materials, and between
synthetic sheets and covers, means we are in close contact with numerous, potentially harmful chemicals every night — again for years on end. And there is now a growing body of international concern about the health effects of sleeping near electromagnetic fields (EMFs), especially those associated with high-voltage power lines. And the spotlight of concern is now being turned toward the EMFs of domestic supplies as well. A similar worry is the long-term exposure to harmful concentrations of EMFs emanating from the ground beneath the house. This “geopathic stress” caused in certain locations is thought to contribute to disease that may even lead to cancer.
Our sleep does not have to suffer from these problems. Most problems can be dealt with using a little common sense, once our eyes are opened to see the potential hazards. Start by assessing your sleep patterns (and the factors in your lifestyle that may affect your sleep), and look around all your bedrooms to see if you can find the problem areas. Many people now consider the bed to be the most important piece of furniture in the house. Either adapt the ones you have or, if you can, invest in really good beds and bedding.
Sleeping in this bedroom on the Greek island of Patmos would be difficult in the sultry afternoons and humid evenings without the cooling breezes through the open window. The net curtains at the windows and around the four-poster bed, together with the wooden shutters, soften and subdue the penetratingly bright sunlight, helping to create a relaxing retreat.
The round window and gently curving ceiling of this Californian bedroom, are the perfect contours for a restful and tranquil atmosphere. The starkness of the window and the plain white interior into which it is set, are a perfect frame to focus attention on the trees and valley beyond.
