Geopathic stress
The site where your home is built may be affected by positive or negative ground energies. Places “disturbed” by negative energies can be disruptive to sleep and where these are particularly strong they may contribute to serious illnesses. Typical symptomsare: unwillingness to go to bed, cold and cramps during the night, and general exhaustion and depression. Children are especially sensitive and try to avoid such forces by sleeping at the end of, oracross the corner of, the bed. The worst locations are where Curry or Hartmann Grids cross at an underground fault or a watercourse, known as a “black stream”.
Action
Many people begin to suspect they have a problem only when they suffer from continuous poor sleep or when they fall ill for no apparent reason yet improve rapidly away from home. Moving the bed to a different part of the room or to another room altogether often alleviates the problem. In Germany, professional dowsers are employed to check if beds are located over geopathic zones and particularly if they are “cancer beds“. Use an insulating blanket beneath the bed or special electronic devices to neutralize the zone. The traditional remedy was a copper or iron rod driven into the offending zone.
Electromagnetic radiation
The link between close proximity to overhead power-transmission lines and the incidence of leukemia and cancer is gaining official recognition. The risk is increased if you sleep close to such danger areas, and children are the most susceptible. In the home, the bedroom itself can be a source of radiation from electric wiring, alarm clocks, radios, bedside lights, and power sockets. Iron and steel in bedframes, sprung mattresses, beams, radiators, and plumbing equipment can become magnetic and distort the natural magnetic field of the Earth. Electrostress is not fully understood but it may disturb sleep and the rejuvenating processes.
Action
Make sure that the bedroom is well away from high-voltage external cables. You can check magnetism by running a good compass slowly over the mattress — if it deflects from north, the springs or mattress are most likely magnetic. Check all metal objects. Move the bed away from magnetic sources and replace the mattress, frame, and bedding with a wooden base and a natural-fibre-filled mattress. Align yourself with the
Earth’s magnetic field by sleeping in a north-south direction. At night, switch off the electric current in the bedroom via a “demand switch” and choose shielded cables for new wiring. Use battery-operated radios and alarm clocks and avoid electric blankets.
Allergies and toxins
The last place you would expect to be bombarded with toxins and chemicals is in your own bed. But synthetics have come to dominate the bedroom as they do most other rooms. Polyurethane foam pillows and mattresses, polyester- filled quilts and duvets, “non-iron” sheets containing formaldehyde (which never washes out completely), synthetic wall-to-wall carpets, and particle-board furniture and built-in units all emit chemical vapours that pollute the bedroom. Petrochemical-based paints andvinyl wallpapers add to the chemical load, as well as sealing surfaces and preventing vapours escaping. When breathed in every night, they pose serious health hazards and often produce such allergy reactions as breathing difficulties, itchy eyes and skin, headaches, irritability, and tiredness. Dust, mites, and certain natural fibres, especially wool and feathers, also act as allergy triggers in some people. As well, polyurethane foam is a serious fire risk.
Action
Replace all synthetic materials with non- allergenic natural fibres and fabrics. Use 100% pure, untreated cotton or linen sheets and pillow cases; cotton flannel needs no ironing and is usually untreated. Sleep on natural-fibre-filled or nonmagnetic spring mattresses covered with natural fabrics. Latex foam is also non-allergenic as well as hygienic; but for sheer luxury, use a tufted lambs’ wool underblanket. Cellular wool blankets and down duvets are light, warm, and comfortable.
