What you are going to use will naturally depend of the type and weight of whatever it is you want to hang on the wall. Small pictures, for instance, can be hung on concrete or masonry nails hammered into a wall, whereas heavier pictures or curtain railings will require plugs and screws and therefore an electric drill.
There are a few specialist tools for hammering nails into walls without the risk of flattening your thumb, bending a nail or cracking the plaster, but they cost a lot of money and if you so much as heard of them, you probably will not be reading this section for information but rather for entertainment value. If you haven’t heard of these marvellous tools, don’t bother — they take the fun out of the whole exercise.
Whatever it is that you are about to insert into the wall, be very wary of areas that might contain electrical wiring or water pipes. Read the section on drilling basics to familiarize yourself with the necessary precautions.
Drilling Basics
Power tools rule! Are you also one of those deprived souls that never get to play with power tools? Well now is your chance. If you don’t own a drill, beg, rent or borrow one. Using it is not nearly as difficult as it’s made out to be — even BA students can do it.
The only real danger is hitting a water pipe or electrical wiring, and even this is easily avoidable. Stay away from areas close to taps or showerheads (the entire wall), and above and below light fittings, switches and plugs. If it is absolutely essential that you drill there, use the shallowest plugs possible and hope for the best. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
The next most important thing is to get the right size drill bit for the plug and accompanying screw you want to insert into the hole you are about to drill. These are all marked very clearly, but if in doubt don’t hesitate to ask the friendly assistant at your local hardware store. The screws come in varying numbers (indicating thickness), and each number is available in various lengths.
Screws are also manufactured from different materials. Steel screws can be used in most cases, but if you want to use them in the bathroom or kitchen it would be advisable to get brass or other rust-proof screws.
You WILL NEED
DOING THE JOB
The drill will have different settings dependingon what you’re drilling into. Whendrilling into a wall, choose the hammer setting.
To ensure that you don’t drill too deep, measure the length of the plug on the drill bit and mark it with a piece of tape.
Make a small indentation on the wall with a nail to prevent the drill from slipping and leaving a Picassoesque pattern. Holding the drill firmly with both hands, start slowly and stop when you have reached the tape.
Yeeha, hopefully you are not lying on the floor due to an unexpected shock nor are you drenched in water. Success. All that remains to be done is to lightly hammer the plug into the freshly drilled hole and screw in the screw. Now be a sweetheart and hang the picture of your mother-in-law that you claimed was destroyed in the freak fire last summer.
