Boiserie
A French term for woodwork or wainscoting. In decorating it refers to the carved woodwork and paneling of seventeenth- and eighteenth- century French interiors. The carved details were often picked out in gilt and frequently were extremely elaborate. Traditionally used in conjunction with gilt furnishings and frames, and with an overdoor paneling with painting, boiserie blends only in very formal settings.
Bolster
A long, firmly stuffed pillow or cushion, usually cylindrical in shape. Bolsters were popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as added arm and back supports at the sides and backs of sofas and chairs, and as the supports of softer cushions heaped against them to adjust the seat to the comfort of the sitter. Side bolsters have remained regular accessories for some traditional furniture styles, and wedge-shaped bolsters are popular as backrests. Bolsters running the full width of the mattress are often used on beds.
Bolt
In textiles, a quantity of cloth wrapped around a cylindrical or oblong cardboard core. This form of packaging is economical for mills and shippers and practical for display and storage in retail outlets. As a legal measure a bolt is equal to forty yards, but the term is seldom used so rigidly.
Bombe
A French term meaning bulged or bellied out. In furniture it refers to a surface that swells outward and then recedes. This line appeared in commodes and chests at the end of the Louis XIV and the Régence periods in France and reached its height during the Louis XV period in the third quarter of the eighteenth. century. The bombe design is also common in Venetian Rococo cabinet and drawer furniture and in Chippendale furniture designed in the French style. Modified, it is still popular in formal furniture styles today. The illustration shows an eighteenth-century Venetian commode.
Bonded Fabric
A fabric manufactured with a layer of another material affixed to its underside. A cementing medium is used to adhere the reinforcing material. This added layer is sometimes made of vinyl or foam rubber but is more often a cheap fabric of tight weave. Bonding a fabric gives it greater strength and warmth.
Bone China
An English porcelain that contains calcined bone ash mixed into the clay body. Invented at Bow, England, in the mid-eighteenth century, bone china is softer than true porcelain but is easier to make; it is considerably more durable than soft-paste porcelain.
Bookcases and Bookshelves
Built-in or freestanding, bookcases and shelves can provide an attractive focal point for your room. You can use them alone or combine them with storage units, radio, phonograph, and television set to create an entertainment center. The possible arrangements are unlimited—choose one that makes the best use of available space and expresses your interests and taste.
