To hang or fix wall brackets or other items to a brick or masonry wall it is necessary to drill and plug the wall.
Plastic wall hanging plugs are preferable for a screw fixing and a wooden plug 10 mm to 12 mm in diameter is suitable when a nail fixing is adopted. To select a wall hanging plastic plug, first determine the gauge of the screw to be used and select a suitable one from the range of wall hanging plugs usually available in hardware stores. The length of the wall hanging screw should then be equal to the length of the plug plus the thickness of the item to be fixed.
To drill the wall you will require an electric drill, preferably a hammer drill, and a masonry bit the correct size to suit the wall hanging plug. Mark the position of the wall hanging plug on the wall with a cross, this will allow you to note if the hole drifts off-centre. Place a mark on the masonry bit to indicate the depth of the hole equal to the length of the wall hanging plug, plus about 10 mm.
Hold the drilling machine square to the face of the wall and commence drilling, first pressing lightly until the wall hanging hole is seen to be started in the correct position. Press firmly on the drill to keep it cutting and not just rubbing in the wall hanging hole (this will blunt the drill), and continue until the required wall hanging depth is reached. Clear the waste dust from the wall hanging hole and drive the plug into the hole until it is flush with the surface.
Hold the wall hanging item to be fixed in position, enter the screw into the plug and tighten securely. Note: When fixing into soft plastered walls make sure that the wall hanging plug is long enough to penetrate sufficiently into the firm masonry below. Most importantly, beware of drilling into a water pipe or electric cable that could be bedded just below the surface.
Tool hire checklist Ensure that the wall drilling tool is demonstrated to you and that you are familiar with its operation and safety.
- Be certain that the wall hangings drilling equipment you choose is right for the job. Ask for advice if you are not sure.
- Read and understand the hire wall hangings drilling contract. The major wall hangings drilling companies offer an insurance cover against damage. This is economical and worth considering if you are doing a heavy job with expensive wall hangings drilling equipment.
- Be sure to include any necessary safety wall hangings drilling equipment when you hire. Gloves, goggles and so on are often essential when using power equipment.
- Don’t be tempted to rush a job, particularly if you are using unfamiliar and potentially dangerous wall hangings drilling equipment. It’s far better to extend the hire period.
