Wardrobes and built-ins
These days wardrobes are generally built-in, with sliding doors which include a full height mirror. These built-ins are an integral part of the house.
The fit-out of wardrobes has gone beyond a few drawers, some hanging space and shelves. Now wardrobe companies will supply a whole system that includes ample drawers, shelves and hanging space, often on several levels. Manufacturers also include wire basket storage systems which may be wheeled or fixed and are usually stackable; shoe storage; pullout extra towel rails; tie and belt racks. Normally, the wardrobe will be internally lit, with an automatic switch, and may also include a dressing table-cum-mirror arrangement. The whole unit may even be built across the entrance to an otherwise poky en-suite or dressing room. Many are built of predrilled vertical members, allowing the fittings to be changed to an infinite number of combinations as needs change, or as you accumulate more possessions.
Cabinets and cupboards
The ultimate in the furniture maker’s art is that of attractive display cabinets. Often cabinets do not make best use of the space they occupy, but then that is not their primary function.
Cabinets would be amongst the most expensive forms of storage in that often solid wood is used, great detail in workmanship is displayed, and areas of glass, also expensive, abound. The level of finish is usually much better than that of the average built-in, with the fit of doors and attention to detail superior.
Cabinets are most often chosen to store and display collections of china, porcelain, art objects, crystal, and just about anything else of value. Because of the display aspect of cabinets, the contents are normally not crammed in as in other storage units.
