Under-fives Handbag
Cute as they are, little children can create a storage nightmare. They are an active, inquisitive bunch, and their bedroom will reflect their changing needs. They require masses of equipment, most of which are vital at one stage of growth and redundant at another. In terms of storage, expandable and adjustable units are the most sensible option. They should be safe and durable, and all handles and shelves should be low enough for your child to reach.
In the average toddler’s room, you will find nappies, a changing table, a bottom seat, a nappy bucket; a chest of drawers choking with singlets, tops, bottoms, booties, all-in-one suits, a woolly dressing gown, hats; soft toys, mobiles, blocks, a little blackboard; a night light, sheets and blankets; books of all shapes and sizes - the list never ends.
One storage item that is truly vital when young children are around is your basic mothproofed chest or box/boxes. Store as you go along, washing and putting aside clothing or equipment for the next baby - your own, your sister’s or your friends’!
Books and toys are the other major storage problem in a young child’s room. Putting things out of sight for a while (perhaps in an attractive storage box) is a good trick with under twos - they think the toys are brand new when re-presented!
The over twos get more sentimentally attached to things as a rule and like familiar things around them. An attractive toy box (make sure the lid cannot drop suddenly and that the box has good ventilation) and a bookshelf that displays books rather than stores them, spine to the forefront, are both practical and decorating assets. Remember that a bed and desk will subsequently take the place of the cot and changing area. Also, bright colours may win out over pastels.
School-age child Handbag
Once your child starts school, his or her storage needs will change. A desk with drawers is needed to take the increasing amounts of paperwork that the child needs or wants to keep.
A cork pin-up board also becomes a storage point for favourite pieces of memorabilia, school notices, sports notices, ribbons, badges and those all- important stickers. Rather here than on the fridge or underfoot.
Wardrobe needs are more sophisticated now, with more hanging space needed; shoe storage becomes more important, as do bookshelves.
Bedrooms Handbag
Bunk beds are good in a shared room situation, and many incorporate desks and storage units. Privacy becomes increasingly vital to a child, so provide some storage that can be locked, and give the child a key (keep a spare to cover the inevitable, tragic loss!).
Young childen are avid collectors, so make sure you have a good collection of glass jars, baskets, boxes and tins. A toy box will continue to be invaluable for storage of sports or hobby-related equipment.
